SEALS fall 3-1 to Gor Mahia in Sportpesa Derby
Taking on the league leaders was never going to be a stroll in the park, but Muranga SEAL arrived sharp, confident, and ready to make a statement, and for large parts of this contest, they did exactly that.
Gor Mahia started brightly, forcing the Seals' defence into early action, but the backline held firm with composure and authority. The Seals responded with intent. Evergreen midfielder Michael Owen went close with a well-struck free kick, before Michael Macharia tested the Gor keeper to signal the Seals' growing influence in the game.
The deadlock was broken in the 18th minute when Gor forward Kapen lobbed the goalkeeper, a goal that drew fierce debate over a suspected offside, to put the visitors ahead. The Seals refused to fold. A composed long ball in the 38th minute was headed on by Macharia into the path of captain Joseph 'King Joe' Waithira, who finished coolly from the edge of the box. His 17th goal of the season drew roars from the faithful and sent both sides into the break level at 1-1.
The second half told a different story. Shariff Musa, a menace down the left throughout, switched flanks to devastating effect, firing Gor ahead in the 52nd minute. Substitute Ebenezer Assifuah then put the result beyond doubt in the 76th minute, completing a 3-1 scoreline that reflected the gulf in squad depth between a battle-hardened title contender and a Seals side still writing their story.
There are lessons here, and this group is learning fast. The hunger, the spirit, the quality of King Joe's finish, all signs that the SEAL Nation is doing its best to stay afloat.
